Bacteriostatic water for peptides: what it is, and where to buy it

Bacteriostatic Water for Injection, USP is sterile water with a small amount of benzyl alcohol added as a preservative — that preservative is the entire reason it exists, and the entire reason it is the standard diluent for a peptide vial you plan to enter more than once.

Bacteriostatic water vs. sterile water for injection

Bacteriostatic Water for Injection, USP contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative in most plastic-vial presentations (some 20 mL glass-vial products run 1.1% — the exact figure is printed on your vial, so check it rather than assume). The FDA-approved labeling describes it plainly: it is supplied in a “multiple-dose container from which repeated withdrawals may be made” — the benzyl alcohol is what makes that safe, by suppressing bacterial growth across repeated punctures.

Sterile Water for Injection is the same idea without the preservative. It has no antimicrobial protection, so its labeling limits it to single use — once a needle enters an unpreserved vial, nothing is holding back whatever gets introduced. That single fact is the entire difference, and it is why the two are not interchangeable for a vial you intend to draw from more than once.

How much bacteriostatic water do you add?

The one hard safety caveat

Benzyl alcohol is contraindicated in neonates. The FDA-approved labeling for bacteriostatic water states it plainly: “not for use in neonates,” because of documented benzyl-alcohol toxicity in premature infants — a cluster of cases from the early 1980s, traced to preserved flush solutions, that came to be known as “gasping syndrome.” That history is specific to infants and has no bearing on adult use, but it is the reason this is not a universal, risk-free diluent for every population.

Mixing it in, and how long it's good for

Mechanically: the vial and the water both have rubber stoppers, both get wiped with an alcohol swab, and the water is added slowly down the inside glass wall rather than blasted onto the powder — peptides are fragile, and rough handling can degrade them. On timing: the manufacturer labeling we reviewed gives a storage condition for an unopened vial — room temperature, 20–25°C (68–77°F) — but does not itself print a discard-by date for after first entry. Standard pharmacy practice fills that gap: opened multi-dose vials default to a 28-day beyond-use date under USP General Chapter <797> unless the manufacturer states otherwise. Treat 28 days as a ceiling, never exceed the vial's own printed expiration date, and note that this is a statement about the water — how long the specific peptide you dissolved in it stays intact in solution is a separate question, usually answered by refrigerating the mixed vial and using it sooner rather than later.

Where to actually buy bacteriostatic water

Here is the honest version, not a vendor list. Bacteriostatic Water for Injection is a prescription (“Rx only”) pharmaceutical under its FDA-approved labeling — the same regulatory category as the peptide you're mixing into it, not an unregulated research product.
